in collaboration with Plain Language Academies.
Learn the principles of plain language to improve your written communications
What do informational documents such as flyers, letters, e-mails, instruction lists, posters, administrative documents, and Web content have in common? Most people scan them quickly, focusing only on the information that catches their eye. These documents often contain too much detail, use complex words, and are visually overloaded. As a result, readers miss or misunderstand a lot of information.
To communicate information clearly, documents must be tailored to the needs of the target audience. In this way, they will be understood on first reading and will be easy to read, understand, and use. Plain language is key to ensuring that documents and communications are understood on first reading.
This international approach is guided by ISO standards. It is based on principles that focus on words and phrases as well as the way information is structured and presented visually.
In this hands-on training course, participants will learn a step-by-step process for applying the principles of plain language. They will learn about the importance of tailoring their texts to meet the needs of their target audience. They will also learn how to select and organize information, and how to write clearly and simply.
This training is divided into four parts:
· Today’s information environment
· What is literacy?
· What is plain Language?
· The 6 steps to writing in plain language with practical exercises

Writing clearly: for content understood on first reading
The training is spread over 2 days:
· Tuesday, January 30, 2024, 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. EST
· Wednesday, January 31, 2024, 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. EST
Registration is done on the Eventbrite platform. You can register and pay by credit card, no matter where you are.
You will need an internet connection to participate. The training takes place on Zoom and involves your active participation. You will also need a microphone and a camera.
We can provide you with a certificate of participation on request.

Anthropologues de la santé, elles comptent plusieurs années d’expérience en santé publique. Notamment, elles ont travaillé au développement de documents d’information grand public dans le cadre de la production du guide Mieux vivre avec notre enfant de la grossesse à deux ans. À travers les années, elles ont aussi développé une expertise en littératie en santé.
Ce qu’elles aiment le plus, c’est écrire en langage clair et simple, tester des documents auprès de publics cibles, faire des évaluations de la clarté de documents et donner de la formation.

Trained as medical anthropologists, they have many years of experience in public health. Among other projects, they gained extensive experience writing for the general public in plain language while producing and editing the guide From Tiny Tot to Toddler. Over the years, they have also developed expertise in health literacy.
What they love most, is write in plain language, test documents with target audiences, do document clarity assessments, and provide training.
